If someone has pointed you to this guide – you’ve most likely asked one of the many questions every newbie asks. Some of us regulars get asked the same questions all the time. you can imagine someone feeling like a broken record if they’ve been hassled by a dozen noobs asking the same thing several times.
Anyways – Here’s the facts:
For now – FORGET THE BLOODY MONEY! – money is not important to you right now. You won’t know how to use it wisely yet. Better of learning things a bit before getting financial. Plus if you learn to know where to look – you can get a lot of things for free! Either way – the following are ways to get some credits into your avatar:
* camp chairs – scattered about some places are things you can sit on- usually have some text on them that say “earn 2L for every 10 minutes” – it’s a slow way to get money but it’s one way…
* in-world jobs – some might not pay much better than the camp chairs but others can pay a reasonable amount depending on what it is.
* doing the odd survey thing – boring as bat shit usually and they sometimes demand personal info – so be careful with these things.
* be creative and build things – if you are good enough you might be able to earn some pocket change from it.
* credit card, paypal and other forms of your own accounts – at times the best way to get credits is to sacrifice some yourself – a fast way to get money in… at the expense of your bank account.
For a start you’ll need money – but just like money – you’re not going to need it to begin with and you will probably have no idea on how to manage it. I say worry about land at a later date when you’ve settled in a lot more. Not everyone has land, Some might buy and own land , some might rent, others are just nomads passing by…
Technically it’s not a game – it’s a virtual environment. The best way to describe Second Life is that it’s a fusion of a number of things: 3D interaction and building, voice chat, text chat, and a few other technology.
Basically – linden labs made a virtual environment, added some building tools and told the masses – “here you go kids.. have some fun with that stuff…”
About 99% of the stuff you see in Second Life is user created.
Do what you want! it’s a virtual world – you’re not restricted to any time limit to kill some computer game badguy (unless you get involved in an in-world game somewhere) It’s all just a virtual world, explore places – find interesting things, meet people, build things.. take your pick…
Two other chapters will help for this – look in the main Survival Guide page for “getting about and finding things” and “How to dress up your avatar”. There is a fair bit more detail involved around getting the bits and getting the right look.
By a couple of ways – one is to use a flying vehichle or object that you sit on. But this can be a tedious task every time you want to get up there.
The other is that most regulars usually have a flight assist tool built into a hud or something – so that when they hit the standard flight height – the flight assist tool provides a “boost” to get you going higher as if you weren’t limited. If you don’t have a hud that gives you such capability – here is a simple free flight assist tool that you can drag to inventory and wear. If attached right it shows a “feather” in the lower left corner of your screen. (you can click the feather for changing the mode of the flight feather)
