SL Handbook – Put some clothes on!

Put some bloody clothes on!

and other common manners that will save your ass

[Back to index]

There may be a reason you have been handed this handbook by someone. You might have been annoying them without realising it or unknowingly breaking the local rules of the land/sim that you are in.

Consider this topic as a guide on how to get along with other avatars and hopefully get more assistance from them. Remember – most avatars are people too! If you upset them – it could get you into trouble.

> Clothing – keeping your pants on so that others won’t lose an eye…

At some point you are going to be trying to figure out how to alter your clothes and appearance. Firstly – make sure you know where you are, each sim has a classification set as well as the rules set out by the local landeholders.
PG= Your standard family friendly rating: Going naked in a PG area is often seen asĀ  inappropriate and can get you into trouble.
Mature= Mature zone can be a real mix of standards by local admins. While some may be open minded and flexible and allow all types of mature, adult, sexual, violent & questionable content. Other mature areas may adopt a more PG approach where the only difference to PG would be along the lines of permitting swearing or focusing more on adult leve themes without much focus on the sex drugs and rock’n'roll.
Adult= This has been a more recent addition, created with the aim of separating the harder filth from the tamer mature zones. Basically if you are not age verified you can’t get to these places.

Anyways – back to clothing, if you’re gonna experiment with your wardrobe it’s best to find an appropriate place so that if you do end up naked you won’t get people around you getting all offended about it. Look for the topic on “How to Dress up your Avatar”

> Friend requests

Because you are new one of your early instincts is to establish some friends to chat to, seek advice, etc.. I say “Whoa! Slow down there!”
Everyone responds to friend requests in different ways depending on wnat they have experienced. While other noobs like yourself are likely to accept your requests as you’ll probably have a nice social chat with them later and probably be learning things together. Go easy on the older, more experienced veteran avvies – chances are is that they may get a lot of requests that they simply turn down most offers for the sake of some privacy.
Friend status on a basic level lets you both know when each other is online. At times if you have an ultra large friend list it can be frustrating at times dealing with messages and teleport requests from many people you might not know well. A lot of long term users are often keen on shortening their friends list in order to keep it easier to find the ones tey want to keep in touch with.
If your friend request gets rejected by someone or a friend has removed your friend status with you. Don’t take it too hard as they probably often have neutral reasons for doing it. Besides there are plenty of other people to meet and gain friendship with.

> No Begging!

Usually if you see something cool and ask nicely “is that a freebie? Can I get a copy?” at times will earn you some cool things. Don’t do it for every cool thing you see or others will think you’re a hoarding sponge absorbing anything in sight.
Things that can offend others around you (and in some places gets you banned) that you shouldn’t do is asking for money, pestering someone for something when they have already said no, attempting to sell something personally when the potential buyer simply isn’t interested.

A common habit similiar to begging that some dodgy noobs have tried is attempting to sell items to people hanging about in popular areas – especially sandbox areas (because you’ll be preaching to those who can mske it themselves as good if not better that what you have. Also trying to con people into paying for common freebies makes the situation worse). If you’re that bent on earning money go and buy the DLC Money Making Guide for some solid advice.

> Cleaning up after yourself.

At times you will be checking out your stuff from inventory or be somewhere building things. If you’re going to leave the area or about to log off – PICK UP YOUR THINGS!!!

While the admins of the sim that you left the items in has the power to clean up your stuff with just a few clicks – it does often piss them off – depending on the admin, location and the mood they are in – leaving your junk around without permissions can potentially get you banned. Or possbily get a few strong warnings before they kick your ass.
